POWER UNLIMITED
NEW PRAYER AND
HEALING compilation by Percy Wentland
POWER UNLIMITED column by Pastor Dennis Smith
I am passing along this “bit of research” that a friend of mine has done
in regards to prayer and healing. Pray before you read this and ask God for the
wisdom of His Holy Spirit to help you understand what you read. It is very long
and very good!
In the process of learning about healing and perhaps why God sometimes does NOT
heal, remember that this is still not a “magic formula” whereby we go through
the steps and become healed. God wants to speak to us personally about each one
of these verses and steps. He wants us to search our heart and see if there is
something standing between us and Him – for our salvation. Salvation from sin is
the most important kind of healing there is.

PRAYER AND HEALING
1. THE PROBLEM
Reports of answered prayer, fulfilled promises, prayer and anointing services
with healing of the sick have become a rather silent mention in the Church
today. The weekly testimony services of the past, where church members told of
what God had done for them during the past week; have in a great degree,
silently disappeared for lack of participation. So pastors have decided to avoid
the embarrassment of making such a call
Many sick have been anointed numbers of times with no result. I recently asked a
woman whose husband had a serious illness, if they had ever thought of special
prayer and anointing and she said he had been anointed three times with no
results. I know of another man who was seriously ill and for a number of years,
who had asked every evangelist who came to town, to come and have prayer for him
and anoint him, with no results. One day I was helping a friend to give this man
hot fomentation treatments. As I opened the refrigerator to get some ice, I saw
some things that made me wonder if they might possibly have anything to do with
all the unanswered prayers and anointings.
Pastor Morris Venden speaking at a worship service at Pine Springs Ranch, April
2000, made the following statement:
"Some people don't have enough faith to not be healed so all God can do is heal
them!"
Well now, I don’t know, but that appears like a very mind boggling statement! I
have a problem wrapping my mind around that concept. He might have just been
trying to shock his audience, but a NO answer does not build faith. Does it take
a lot of faith to NOT have your prayer answered? Then it would sound like "not
to be healed" would be God’s ultimate, since it takes lots of faith, which most
people don’t have, so, God does second best and just heals them. Then since
there are so few healings it would indicate that everyone has lots of faith. In
still other words, those who are not healed have the most faith and those who
are healed are those who have little or possibly no faith. Absurd, the question
that arises here is "What is God’s reason for not healing?" Does He just
consider a NO answer to be His greatest blessing? Or does He have a better
reason than that?
A BROKEN CONNECTION ~
Isa. 59:1, 2
1 " Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his
ear heavy that it cannot hear:
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins
have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. "
Jesus healed the centurion’s servant because he had such great faith like He had
not seen before in Israel.
Matt. 8:8-10,13
8 "The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest
come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this
man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant,
Do this, and he doeth it.
10 When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I
say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so
be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour." .
VENDEN THEN WENT ON TO SAY: ~
"When pastors get together, some of us who have been pastors for a hundred years
or so, we acknowledge that the number of times we have had miracles could be
counted on the fingers on one hand. As you look at the Bible record, in most
cases, people born on the wrong planet like you and I, do not find God
intervening to overrule the bumps and bruises of life. He walks with us. He
stays with us but in most cases He does not work miracles to change the
situation. We have failed to look at this as we should. We need to take a long
look at John the Baptist. Not Enoch, or Elijah, were greater or more honored
than John the Baptist who perished alone in the dungeon. Of all the gifts heaven
can bestow, fellowship with Christ in suffering is the highest honor."
If God walks with us and stays with us but seldom does anything to help us, that
is not very encouraging! Yes, there is John the Baptist, but is that what we are
to build our hopes on? It may be that it did take more faith for John the
Baptist than for Enoch or Elijah, but that certainly does not down play the
faith of Enoch or Elijah.
Venden does not extent much hope for us to expect God to hear and answer our
prayers or perform a miracle for us when we are in trouble. He admits that he
and other ministers have seen very few and almost no miracles in their life
time. He almost suggests that we should not expect any. He no doubt is honestly
expressing his opinion and feelings from his actual experience . God’s people
today want to know why things are like this. Is this the way God wants it to be?
Is this according to His plan? Is that what we are supposed to expect?
It is strange, but could this attitude have any relationship to the following
statement ?
5T 211
"Here we see that the church--the Lord's sanctuary--was the first to feel the
stroke of the wrath of God. The ancient men, those to whom God had given great
light and who had stood as guardians of the spiritual interests of the people,
had betrayed their trust. They had taken the position that we need not look for
miracles and the marked manifestation of God's power as in former days. Times
have changed. These words strengthen their unbelief, and they say: The Lord will
not do good, neither will He do evil. He is too merciful to visit His people in
judgment. Thus "Peace and safety" is the cry from men who will never again lift
up their voice like a trumpet to show God's people their transgressions and the
house of Jacob their sins. These dumb dogs that would not bark are the ones who
feel the just vengeance of an offended God. Men, maidens, and little children
all perish together. "
What is taking place anyway ? Is it the pastor's fault? Is it the sick person's
fault.? Is it God’s fault ? Is God just routinely out of habit, saying NO these
days, regardless of our cry for help? Is that the kind of answer we are to
expect when we pray? If so, then why Pray? The things that are happening all
around us in the world, as well as in Church today, are so very obvious and
serious that people want to know what is going on. We can’t just excuse these
things off as a minor matter.
2. IS PRAYER AND HEALING IMPORTANT TO GOD?
IF SO, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT ?
DA 350
"During His ministry Jesus devoted more time to healing the sick than to
preaching. His miracles testified to the truth of His words, that He came not to
destroy but to save."
IF JESUS SPENT MORE OF HIS TIME HEALING, WHERE DO WE SPEND MOST OF OUR TIME ?
DA 823
"They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." This world is a vast
lazar house, but Christ came to heal the sick, to proclaim deliverance to the
captives of Satan. He was in Himself health and strength. He imparted His life
to the sick, the afflicted, those possessed of demons. He turned away none who
came to receive His healing power. He knew that those who petitioned Him for
help had brought disease upon themselves; yet He did not refuse to heal them.
And when virtue from Christ entered into these poor souls, they were convicted
of sin, and many were healed of their spiritual disease, as well as of their
physical maladies. The gospel still possesses the same power, and why should we
not today witness the same results? "
IF JESUS NEVER TURNED ANY AWAY WHO CAME FOR HEALING WHEN HE WAS HERE, HAS HE
CHANGED ?
Hebrews 13:8
" Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
DA 823
"The gospel still possesses the same power, and why should we not today witness
the same results? - - - - He is just as willing to heal the sick now as when He
was personally on earth."
If this quotation is true, and it is, then the burning question comes home,
"WHAT’S WRONG" It is very clear that we are not getting the same results. The
problem is not with Jesus because the quotation says He is just as willing to
heal the sick now as when He was here on earth and the gospel still possess the
same power today, as then. So what is left that we can blame it onto?
WHAT DID JESUS DO WHEN HE WAS HERE?
WOULD YOU BELIEVE - HE HEALED EVERY SICKNESS AND EVERY DISEASE -
MATT. 4:23,24
23 " And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and
preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all
manner of disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria and they brought unto him all sick
people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were
possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the
palsy; and he healed them."
EV 46,7
"We read of Christ's labors: "Jesus went about all the cities and villages,
teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and
healing every sickness and every disease among the people." Just such a work as
this is to be done in our cities and villages, in the highways and hedges. The
gospel of the third angel's message is to be carried to all classes.-- "
DA 823
". He turned away none who came to receive His healing power. He knew that those
who petitioned Him for help had brought disease upon themselves; yet He did not
refuse to heal them. And when virtue from Christ entered into these poor souls,
they were convicted of sin, and many were healed of their spiritual disease, as
well as of their physical maladies. The gospel still possesses the same power,
and why should we not today witness the same results? "
TODAY, PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR THE ANSWER TO THAT VERY QUESTION.
3. CONSIDER THIS MATTER EARNESTLY
FOLLOW OUR EXAMPLE ~
Messenger, December 15, 1892 par. 6
" Jesus lived a life of prayer; after toiling all day, preaching to the
ignorant, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, raising the dead, feeding
the multitudes, evening after evening He went away from the confusion of the
city, and in some retired place, poured forth supplication to his Father with
strong crying and tears. At times the bright beams of the moon shone upon his
bowed form, and again clouds and darkness shut away all light. While bowed in
the attitude of a suppliant, the dew and the frost of night rested upon Him. He
frequently continued his petitions through the entire night. If the Saviour of
men felt the need of prayer in our behalf, how much more should feeble, sinful
mortals feel the necessity of prayer--fervent, constant prayer--on their own
account! "
COL 233,4
"Christ's servants are to follow His example. As He went from place to place, He
comforted the suffering and healed the sick. Then He placed before them the
great truths in regard to His kingdom. This is the work of His followers."
9T 127
"Christ's example must be followed by those who claim to be His children.
Relieve the physical necessities of your fellow men, and their gratitude will
break down the barriers, and enable you to reach their hearts. Consider this
matter earnestly."
AA 106
"The Lord wrought through them. Wherever they went, the sick were healed, and
the poor had the gospel preached unto them."
9T 168
" Christ is no longer in this world in person, to go through our cities and
towns and villages, healing the sick; but He has commissioned us to carry
forward the medical missionary work that He began"
4. WHAT DID JESUS DO?
IN HEALING ~
THE CENTURION -
Matt. 8:5-16
:5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion,
beseeching him,
6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously
tormented.
7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest
come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this
[man], Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant,
Do this, and he doeth it.
10 When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I
say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall
sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there
shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed,
[so] be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid,
and sick of a fever.
15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and
ministered unto them.
16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with
devils: and he cast out the spirits with is word, and healed all that were sick:
MAN WITH THE WITHERED HAND ~
Luke 6:9,10
9 "Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the
Sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth
thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other."
THE MAN WITH DROPSY
Luke 14:2-6
2 " And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful
to heal on the Sabbath day?
4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into
a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the Sabbath day?
6 And they could not answer him again to these things."
THE HELPLESS CRIPPLE AT THE POOL OF BETHESDA ~
DA 201-3
" "Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the
Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of
impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water." }
"At certain seasons the waters of this pool were agitated, and it was commonly
believed that this was the result of supernatural power, and that whoever first
after the troubling of the pool stepped into the waters, would be healed of
whatever disease he had. Hundreds of sufferers visited the place; but so great
was the crowd when the water was troubled that they rushed forward, trampling
underfoot men, women, and children, weaker than themselves. Many could not get
near the pool. Many who had succeeded in reaching it died upon its brink.
Shelters had been erected about the place, that the sick might be protected from
the heat by day and the chilliness of the night. There were some who spent the
night in these porches, creeping to the edge of the pool day after day, in the
vain hope of relief.
"Jesus was again at Jerusalem. Walking alone, in apparent meditation and prayer,
He came to the pool. He saw the wretched sufferers watching for that which they
supposed to be their only chance of cure. He longed to exercise His healing
power, and make every sufferer whole. But it was the Sabbath day. Multitudes
were going to the temple for worship, and He knew that such an act of healing
would so excite the prejudice of the Jews as to cut short His work.
" But the Saviour saw one case of supreme wretchedness. It was that of a man who
had been a helpless cripple for thirty-eight years. His disease was in a great
degree the result of his own sin, and was looked upon as a judgment from God.
Alone and friendless, feeling that he was shut out from God's mercy, the
sufferer had passed long years of misery. At the time when it was expected that
the waters would be troubled, those who pitied his helplessness would bear him
to the porches. But at the favored moment he had no one to help him in. He had
seen the rippling of the water, but had never been able to get farther than the
edge of the pool. Others stronger than he would plunge in before him. He could
not contend successfully with the selfish, scrambling crowd. His persistent
efforts toward the one object, and his anxiety and continual disappointment,
were fast wearing away the remnant of his strength.
"The sick man was lying on his mat, and occasionally lifting his head to gaze at
the pool, when a tender, compassionate face bent over him, and the words, "Wilt
thou be made whole?" arrested his attention. Hope came to his heart. He felt
that in some way he was to have help. But the glow of encouragement soon faded.
He remembered how often he had tried to reach the pool, and now he had little
prospect of living till it should again be troubled. He turned away wearily,
saying, "Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the
pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me."
"Jesus does not ask this sufferer to exercise faith in Him. He simply says,
"Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." But the man's faith takes hold upon that
word. Every nerve and muscle thrills with new life, and healthful action comes
to his crippled limbs. Without question he sets his will to obey the command of
Christ, and all his muscles respond to his will. Springing to his feet, he finds
himself an active man.
" Jesus had given him no assurance of divine help. The man might have stopped to
doubt, and lost his one chance of healing. But he believed Christ's word, and in
acting upon it he received strength."
THE LEPER BY THE LAKE ~
2SP 227-29
" Jesus was teaching by the lake outside the city limits, and many were gathered
to hear his words. The leper, who in his seclusion had heard of some of his
mighty works, came out to see him, and drew as near as he dared. Since his
exile, the disease had made fearful inroads upon his system. He was now a
loathsome spectacle, his decaying body was horrible to look upon. Standing afar
off, he heard some of the words of Jesus, and saw him laying hands upon the sick
to heal them. He beheld, with amazement, the lame, the blind, the paralytic, and
those dying of various maladies, rise up at a word from the Saviour, restored to
health and praising God for their salvation. He looked upon his own wretched
body and wondered if this great Physician could not cure even him. The more he
heard, and saw, and considered the matter, the more he was convinced that this
was really the promised Saviour of the world, to whom all things were possible.
None could perform such miracles but Him who was authorized of God, and the
leper longed to come into his presence and be healed.
" He had not intended to approach near enough to endanger the people; but now
his mind was so powerfully wrought upon that he forgot the restrictions that had
been placed upon him, the safety of the people, and the horror with which they
regarded him. He thought only of his blessed hope that the power of Jesus could
set him free from his infirmity. His faith laid hold of the Saviour, and he
pressed forward, heedless of the frightened multitude that fell back as he
approached and crowded over and upon each other to avoid him.
"Some thought to prevent him from approaching Jesus, but their efforts were in
vain. He neither saw nor heard them. The expressions of loathing and looks of
horror that greeted his appearance were lost upon him. He saw only the Son of
God, he heard only the voice that was giving health and happiness to the
suffering and unfortunate. As he came before Jesus, his pent-up feelings found
vent, he prostrated his foul, decaying body before him, crying out, "Lord, if
thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." His words were few, but comprehended his
great need. He believed that Christ was able to give him life and health.
" Jesus did not shrink from his approach, but drew near him. The people fell
back, and even the disciples were filled with terror, and would fain have
prevented their Master from touching him; for by the law of Moses he who touched
a leper was himself unclean. But Jesus, with calm fearlessness, laid his hand
upon the supplicant and answered his petition with the magic words, "Be thou
clean!"
" No sooner were these life-giving words spoken than the dying body of
corruption was changed to a being of healthy flesh, sensitive nerves, and firm
muscle. The rough, scaly surface peculiar to leprosy was gone, and a soft glow,
like that upon the skin of a healthy child, appeared in its place. The eager
multitude now lose their terror, and crowd around to behold this new
manifestation of divine power."
2SP 260,61
"He was so pressed upon by the multitude that he went a little apart upon a
grassy eminence, where he could be seen and heard by all the people. Here he
taught them through the entire day, and healed all the sick and afflicted that
were brought to him."
THE NOBLEMAN’S SON ~
John 4:46-53
46 " So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And
there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto
him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at
the point of death.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not
believe.
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the
word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told [him], saying,
Thy son liveth.
52 Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto
him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that [it was] at the same hour, in the which Jesus said
unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house."
THE MAN WITH PALSY ~
Luke 5:18-25
18 "And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and
they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of
the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling
with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven
thee.
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which
speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What
reason ye in your hearts?
23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and
walk?
24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive
sins, he said unto the sick of the palsy, I say unto thee, Arise, and take up
thy couch, and go into thine house.
25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and
departed to his own house, glorifying God."
SPIRIT OF PROPHECY DESCRIPTION OF THIS HEALING ~
DA 267-70
"Jesus was teaching in the house of Peter. According to their custom, His
disciples sat close about Him, and "there were Pharisees and doctors of the law
sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and
Jerusalem." These had come as spies, seeking an accusation against Jesus.
Outside of these officials thronged the promiscuous multitude, the eager, the
reverent, the curious, and the unbelieving. Different nationalities and all
grades of society were represented. "And the power of the Lord was present to
heal." The Spirit of life brooded over the assembly, but Pharisees and doctors
did not discern its presence. They felt no sense of need, and the healing was
not for them. "He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath
sent empty away." Luke 1:53.
"Again and again the bearers of the paralytic tried to push their way through
the crowd, but in vain. The sick man looked about him in unutterable anguish.
When the longed-for help was so near, how could he relinquish hope? At his
suggestion his friends bore him to the top of the house and, breaking up the
roof, let him down at the feet of Jesus. The discourse was interrupted. The
Saviour looked upon the mournful countenance, and saw the pleading eyes fixed
upon Him. He understood the case; He had drawn to Himself that perplexed and
doubting spirit. While the paralytic was yet at home, the Saviour had brought
conviction to his conscience. When he repented of his sins, and believed in the
power of Jesus to make him whole, the life-giving mercies of the Saviour had
first blessed his longing heart. Jesus had watched the first glimmer of faith
grow into a belief that He was the sinner's only helper, and had seen it grow
stronger with every effort to come into His presence.
" Now, in words that fell like music on the sufferer's ear, the Saviour said,
"Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee."
"The burden of despair rolls from the sick man's soul; the peace of forgiveness
rests upon his spirit, and shines out upon his countenance. His physical pain is
gone, and his whole being is transformed. The helpless paralytic is healed! the
guilty sinner is pardoned!
"In simple faith he accepted the words of Jesus as the boon of new life. He
urged no further request, but lay in blissful silence, too happy for words. The
light of heaven irradiated his countenance, and the people looked with awe upon
the scene.
"The rabbis had waited anxiously to see what disposition Christ would make of
this case. They recollected how the man had appealed to them for help, and they
had refused him hope or sympathy. Not satisfied with this, they had declared
that he was suffering the curse of God for his sins. These things came fresh to
their minds when they saw the sick man before them. They marked the interest
with which all were watching the scene, and they felt a terrible fear of losing
their own influence over the people.
"These dignitaries did not exchange words together, but looking into one
another's faces they read the same thought in each, that something must be done
to arrest the tide of feeling. Jesus had declared that the sins of the paralytic
were forgiven. The Pharisees caught at these words as blasphemy, and conceived
that they could present this as a sin worthy of death. They said in their
hearts, "He blasphemeth: who can forgive sins but One, even God?" Mark 2:7, R.
V.
" Fixing His glance upon them, beneath which they cowered, and drew back, Jesus
said, "Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say,
Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that
the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins," He said, turning to the
paralytic, "Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house."
"Then he who had been borne on a litter to Jesus rises to his feet with the
elasticity and strength of youth. The life-giving blood bounds through his
veins. Every organ of his body springs into sudden activity. The glow of health
succeeds the pallor of approaching death. "And immediately he arose, took up the
bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and
glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion."
"Oh, wondrous love of Christ, stooping to heal the guilty and the afflicted!
Divinity sorrowing over and soothing the ills of suffering humanity! Oh,
marvelous power thus displayed to the children of men! Who can doubt the message
of salvation? Who can slight the mercies of a compassionate Redeemer?
" It required nothing less than creative power to restore health to that
decaying body. The same voice that spoke life to man created from the dust of
the earth had spoken life to the dying paralytic. And the same power that gave
life to the body had renewed the heart. He who at the creation "spake, and it
was," who "commanded, and it stood fast," (Ps. 33:9), had spoken life to the
soul dead in trespasses and sins. The healing of the body was an evidence of the
power that had renewed the heart. Christ bade the paralytic arise and walk,
"that ye may know," He said, "that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive
sins."
" The paralytic found in Christ healing for both the soul and the body. The
spiritual healing was followed by physical restoration. This lesson should not
be overlooked. There are today thousands suffering from physical disease, who,
like the paralytic, are longing for the message, "Thy sins are forgiven." The
burden of sin, with its unrest and unsatisfied desires, is the foundation of
their maladies. They can find no relief until they come to the Healer of the
soul. The peace which He alone can give, would impart vigor to the mind, and
health to the body.
" Jesus came to "destroy the works of the devil." "In Him was life," and He
says, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly." He is "a quickening spirit." 1 John 3:8; John 1:4; 10:10; 1 Cor.
15:45. And He still has the same life-giving power as when on earth He healed
the sick, and spoke forgiveness to the sinner. He "forgiveth all thine
iniquities," He "healeth all thy diseases." Ps. 103:3.
" The effect produced upon the people by the healing of the paralytic was as if
heaven had opened, and revealed the glories of the better world. As the man who
had been cured passed through the multitude, blessing God at every step, and
bearing his burden as if it were a feather's weight, the people fell back to
give him room, and with awe-stricken faces gazed upon him, whispering softly
among themselves, "We have seen strange things today."
"The Pharisees were dumb with amazement and overwhelmed with defeat. They saw
that here was no opportunity for their jealousy to inflame the multitude. The
wonderful work wrought upon the man whom they had given over to the wrath of God
had so impressed the people that the rabbis were for the time forgotten. They
saw that Christ possessed a power which they had ascribed to God alone; yet the
gentle dignity of His manner was in marked contrast to their own haughty
bearing. They were disconcerted and abashed, recognizing, but not confessing,
the presence of a superior being. The stronger the evidence that Jesus had power
on earth to forgive sins, the more firmly they entrenched themselves in
unbelief. From the home of Peter, where they had seen the paralytic restored by
His word, they went away to invent new schemes for silencing the Son of God."
THE MIRACLE OF THE SEVEN LOAVES AND TWO FISHES ~
DA 404,5
" Jesus went up into a mountain, and there the multitude flocked to Him,
bringing their sick and lame, and laying them at His feet. He healed them all;
and the people, heathen as they were, glorified the God of Israel. For three
days they continued to throng about the Saviour, sleeping at night in the open
air, and through the day pressing eagerly to hear the words of Christ, and to
see His works. At the end of three days their food was spent. Jesus would not
send them away hungry, and He called upon His disciples to give them food. Again
the disciples revealed their unbelief. At Bethsaida they had seen how, with
Christ's blessing, their little store availed for the feeding of the multitude;
yet they did not now bring forward their all, trusting His power to multiply it
for the hungry crowds. Moreover, those whom He fed at Bethsaida were Jews; these
were Gentiles and heathen. Jewish prejudice was still strong in the hearts of
the disciples, and they answered Jesus, "Whence can a man satisfy these men with
bread here in the wilderness?" But obedient to His word they brought Him what
they had,--seven loaves and two fishes. The multitude were fed, seven large
baskets of fragments remaining. Four thousand men, besides women and children,
were thus refreshed, and Jesus sent them away with glad and grateful hearts."
WHAT A DAY ! EVERYONE WAS FILLED WITH JOY - EXCEPT THE LEADERS ~
DA 592
"They saw the sick healed, the blind restored to sight, and deaf receive their
hearing, and the crippled leap for joy. "
THESE ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE JESUS HEALED, HE SPENT THE GREATER PORTION OF HIS
DAYS HEALING EVERYONE TO CAME TO HIM. THESE ARE JUST A FEW SAMPLES !
2SP 180-2
"These miracles and works of healing were spread abroad throughout the city. Yet
these acts of mercy only made the bitterness of the Pharisees more intense. They
closely watched all the movements of Jesus, seeking for cause to accuse him.
Their influence prevented many from applying to Jesus for relief from their
infirmities upon the Sabbath day. They feared being stigmatized as transgressors
of the law. But no sooner had the sun passed out of sight in the west than a
great commotion ensued. The diseased flocked to Jesus from every quarter. Those
who had sufficient strength came by themselves, but a much larger number were
borne by their friends to the great Physician.
"They were in every condition of helplessness and approaching death. Some were
burning with fevers, others were paralyzed, stricken with dropsy, blind, deaf,
and lame. And in the distance was heard the pitiful cry of the leper, Unclean!
Unclean! as he stretched his decaying hands toward the Healer. The work of Jesus
commenced when the first afflicted one was brought before him. The supplicants
were healed by a word from his lips or a touch of his hand. With gratitude and
rejoicing they returned to gladden with their enlightened minds and healthy
bodies the homes that they had so recently left as helpless invalids.
" Those who had carefully borne them from their couches to the presence of Jesus
returned with them, weeping tears of joy, and shouting the praises of the
Saviour. Little children were not overlooked, but the puny sufferers were handed
back to their happy mothers rosy with life and health. These living evidences of
the divine power of Jesus created a great excitement in all that region. Never
before had Capernaum witnessed a day like this. The air was filled with the
voice of triumph and shouts of deliverance.
" The heart of the blessed Saviour, who had worked so great cures, was joyful in
the joy he had awakened in the hearts of suffering humanity. He had healed every
one who had applied to him for help. His great love for man was stirred to its
very depths as he witnessed the suffering of those who had come to him, and he
rejoiced in his power to restore them to health and happiness. "
JESUS RAISED THE DEAD
LAZARUS
DA 525
" Sorrow entered the peaceful home where Jesus had rested. Lazarus was stricken
with sudden illness, and his sisters sent to the Saviour, saying, "Lord, behold,
he whom Thou lovest is sick."
DA 526
"Anxiously they waited for a word from Jesus. As long as the spark of life was
yet alive in their brother, they prayed and watched for Jesus to come. But the
messenger returned without Him. Yet he brought the message, "This sickness is
not unto death," and they clung to the hope that Lazarus would live. Tenderly
they tried to speak words of hope and encouragement to the almost unconscious
sufferer. When Lazarus died, they were bitterly disappointed; but they felt the
sustaining grace of Christ, and this kept them from reflecting any blame on the
Saviour.
" When Christ heard the message, the disciples thought He received it coldly. He
did not manifest the sorrow they expected Him to show. Looking up to them, He
said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son
of God might be glorified thereby." For two days He remained in the place where
He was. This delay was a mystery to the disciples."
DA 528
"But Christ had not only the loved ones at Bethany to think of; He had the
training of His disciples to consider. They were to be His representatives to
the world, that the Father's blessing might embrace all. For their sake He
permitted Lazarus to die. Had He restored him from illness to health, the
miracle that is the most positive evidence of His divine character, would not
have been performed. . . . .Had Christ been in the sickroom, Lazarus would not
have died; for Satan would have had no power over him. Death could not have
aimed his dart at Lazarus in the presence of the Life-giver. Therefore Christ
remained away. "
DA 529
"This was the reason of His delay in going to Bethany. This crowning miracle,
the raising of Lazarus, was to set the seal of God on His work and on His claim
to divinity. . . . . On His journey to Bethany, Jesus, according to His custom,
ministered to the sick and the needy. Upon reaching the town He sent a messenger
to the sisters with the tidings of His arrival. Christ did not at once enter the
house, but remained in a quiet place by the wayside. The great outward display
observed by the Jews at the death of friends or relatives was not in harmony
with the spirit of Christ. He heard the sound of wailing from the hired
mourners, and He did not wish to meet the sisters in the scene of confusion.
Among the mourning friends were relatives of the family, some of whom held high
positions of responsibility in Jerusalem. Among these were some of Christ's
bitterest enemies. Christ knew their purposes, and therefore He did not at once
make Himself known. "
DA 529
"The message was given to Martha so quietly that others in the room did not
hear. Absorbed in her grief, Mary did not hear the words. Rising at once, Martha
went out to meet her Lord, but thinking that she had gone to the place where
Lazarus was buried, Mary sat still in her sorrow, making no outcry."
DA 533
" . . . .(Martha) called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come,
and calleth for thee." She delivered her message as quietly as possible; for the
priests and rulers were prepared to arrest Jesus when opportunity offered. The
cries of the mourners prevented her words from being heard.
" On hearing the message, Mary rose hastily, and with an eager look on her face
left the room. Thinking that she had gone to the grave to weep, the mourners
followed her. When she reached the place where Jesus was waiting, she knelt at
His feet, and said with quivering lips, "Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my
brother had not died."
DA 533
""Where have ye laid him?" He asked, "They said unto Him, Lord, come and see."
Together they proceeded to the grave. It was a mournful scene."
DA 534
"It was not only because of the scene before Him that Christ wept. The weight of
the grief of ages was upon Him."
DA 534-6
"Jesus therefore again groaning in Himself cometh to the grave." Lazarus had
been laid in a cave in a rock, and a massive stone had been placed before the
entrance. "Take ye away the stone," Christ said. Thinking that He only wished to
look upon the dead, Martha objected, saying that the body had been buried four
days, and corruption had already begun its work. This statement, made before the
raising of Lazarus, left no room for Christ's enemies to say that a deception
had been practiced. In the past the Pharisees had circulated false statements
regarding the most wonderful manifestations of the power of God. When Christ
raised to life the daughter of Jairus, He had said, "The damsel is not dead, but
sleepeth." Mark 5:39. As she had been sick only a short time, and was raised
immediately after death, the Pharisees declared that the child had not been
dead; that Christ Himself had said she was only asleep. They had tried to make
it appear that Christ could not cure disease, that there was foul play about His
miracles. But in this case, none could deny that Lazarus was dead. . . . . "Take
ye away the stone." Christ could have commanded the stone to remove, and it
would have obeyed His voice. He could have bidden the angels who were close by
His side to do this. At His bidding, invisible hands would have removed the
stone. But it was to be taken away by human hands. Thus Christ would show that
humanity is to co-operate with divinity. What human power can do divine power is
not summoned to do. God does not dispense with man's aid. He strengthens him,
co-operating with him as he uses the powers and capabilities given him. The
command is obeyed. The stone is rolled away. Everything is done openly and
deliberately. All are given a chance to see that no deception is practiced.
There lies the body of Lazarus in its rocky grave, cold and silent in death. The
cries of the mourners are hushed. Surprised and expectant, the company stand
around the sepulcher, waiting to see what is to follow.
"Calmly Christ stands before the tomb. A sacred solemnity rests upon all
present. Christ steps closer to the sepulcher. Lifting His eyes to heaven, He
says, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me." Not long before this,
Christ's enemies had accused Him of blasphemy, and had taken up stones to cast
at Him because He claimed to be the Son of God. They accused Him of performing
miracles by the power of Satan. But here Christ claims God as His Father, and
with perfect confidence declares that He is the Son of God.
" In all that He did, Christ was co-operating with His Father. Ever He had been
careful to make it evident that He did not work independently; it was by faith
and prayer that He wrought His miracles. Christ desired all to know His
relationship with His Father. "Father," He said, "I thank Thee that Thou hast
heard Me. And I knew that Thou hearest Me always: but because of the people
which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me." Here
the disciples and the people were to be given the most convincing evidence in
regard to the relationship existing between Christ and God. They were to be
shown that Christ's claim was not a deception.
"And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth."
His voice, clear and penetrating, pierces the ear of the dead. As He speaks,
divinity flashes through humanity. In His face, which is lighted up by the glory
of God, the people see the assurance of His power. Every eye is fastened on the
entrance to the cave. Every ear is bent to catch the slightest sound. With
intense and painful interest all wait for the test of Christ's divinity, the
evidence that is to substantiate His claim to be the Son of God, or to
extinguish the hope forever
"There is a stir in the silent tomb, and he who was dead stands at the door of
the sepulcher. His movements are impeded by the graveclothes in which he was
laid away, and Christ says to the astonished spectators, "Loose him, and let him
go." Again they are shown that the human worker is to co-operate with God.
Humanity is to work for humanity. Lazarus is set free, and stands before the
company, not as one emaciated from disease, and with feeble, tottering limbs,
but as a man in the prime of life, and in the vigor of a noble manhood. His eyes
beam with intelligence and with love for his Saviour. He casts himself in
adoration at the feet of Jesus.}
"The beholders are at first speechless with amazement. Then there follows an
inexpressible scene of rejoicing and thanksgiving. The sisters receive their
brother back to life as the gift of God, and with joyful tears they brokenly
express their thanks to the Saviour. But while brother, sisters, and friends are
rejoicing in this reunion, Jesus withdraws from the scene. When they look for
the Life-giver, He is not to be found."
THE WIDOW’S SON
LUKE 7:12-15
12 " Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man
carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of
the city was with her.
13. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep
not.
14. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he
said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his
mother."
THE BLIND
John 9:1,2,3,6,7
"1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his
parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the
works of God should be made manifest in him."
6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle,
and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by
interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing."
Matt.9:27-30 - Also - Matt. 12:22 - Mark 8:22,3 - Mark 10:51,2
"27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and
saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus
saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea,
Lord.
29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that
no man know it."
THE DEAF
MARK 7:33,35
"32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his
speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears,
and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is,
Be opened.
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was
loosed, and he spake plain."
5. WHAT DID THE DISCIPLES & PROPHETS DO ?
DISCIPLES WERE COMMISSIONED TO PREACH & HEAL.
MATT. 10:1
"And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power
against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness
and all manner of disease."
MATT 10,7,8
7 "And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye
have received, freely give."
Luke 9:2
"And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick."
Luke 9:6
"And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and
healing every where."
ALL BELIEVERS TODAY ARE ORDAINED WITH THE SAME APOSTOLIC COMMISSION..
DA 823
"When the Saviour said, "Go, . . . teach all nations," He said also, "These
signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils;
they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they
drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the
sick, and they shall recover." The promise is as far-reaching as the commission.
Not that all the gifts are imparted to each believer. The Spirit divides "to
every man severally as He will." 1 Cor. 12:11. But the gifts of the Spirit are
promised to every believer according to his need for the Lord's work. The
promise is just as strong and trustworthy now as in the days of the apostles.
"These signs shall follow them that believe." This is the privilege of God's
children, and faith should lay hold on all that it is possible to have as an
endorsement of faith."
CT 465-7
"When Jesus sent forth the Twelve on their first mission of mercy, He
commissioned them "to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick." Luke
9:2. "As ye go," He said, "preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye
have received, freely give." Matthew 10:7, 8 And as they "went through the
towns, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere" (Luke 9:6), the blessing of
heaven accompanied their labors. The fulfillment of the Saviour's commission by
the disciples made their message the power of God unto salvation, and through
their efforts many were brought to a knowledge of the Messiah.
" The Seventy who were sent out a little later were also commissioned to "heal
the sick" (Luke 10:9) as well as to announce the advent of the promised
Redeemer. In their work of teaching and healing, the disciples followed the
example of the Master Teacher, who ministered to both soul and body. The gospel
which He taught was a message of spiritual life and physical restoration.
Deliverance from sin and the healing of disease were linked together.
"And at the close of His earthly ministry, when He charged His disciples with a
solemn commission to go "into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature," He declared that their ministry would receive confirmation through
the restoration of the sick to health. Ye "shall lay hands on the sick," He
said, "and they shall recover." Mark 16:15, 18. By healing in His name the
diseases of the body, they would testify to His power for the healing of the
soul. {CT 466.1}
"The Saviour's commission to the disciples includes all believers to the end of
time. All to whom the heavenly inspiration has come are put in trust with the
gospel. All who receive the life of Christ are ordained to work for the
salvation of their fellow men. For this work the church was established, and all
who take upon themselves its sacred vows are thereby pledged to be co-workers
with Christ.
"They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." This world is a vast
lazar house; but Christ came to heal the sick, to proclaim deliverance to the
captives of Satan. He was in Himself health and strength. He imparted His life
to the sick, the afflicted, those possessed of demons. He knew that many of
those who petitioned Him for help had brought disease upon themselves, yet He
did not refuse to heal them. And when virtue from Christ entered into these poor
souls, they were convicted of sin, and many were healed of their spiritual
disease as well as of their physical maladies.
"To many of the afflicted ones who received healing, Christ said, "Sin no more,
lest a worse thing come unto thee." John 5:14. Thus He taught that disease is
the result of violating God's laws, both natural and spiritual. The great misery
in the world would not exist had men from the beginning lived in harmony with
the Creator's plan. There are conditions to be observed by all who would
preserve health. All should learn what these conditions are. The Lord is not
pleased with ignorance in regard to His laws, either natural or spiritual. We
are to be workers together with God for the restoration of health to the body as
well as to the soul. "
WHAT DID THE DISCIPLES DO?
HOW ABOUT PETER ?
AA 131,2
" At Joppa, which was near Lydda, there lived a woman named Dorcas, whose good
deeds had made her greatly beloved. She was a worthy disciple of Jesus, and her
life was filled with acts of kindness. She knew who needed comfortable clothing
and who needed sympathy, and she freely ministered to the poor and the
sorrowful. Her skillful fingers were more active than her tongue.
"And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died." The church in
Joppa realized their loss, and hearing that Peter was at Lydda, the believers
sent messengers to him, "desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the
upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats
and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them." In view of the life of
service that Dorcas had lived, it is little wonder that they mourned, that warm
teardrops fell upon the inanimate clay.
"The apostle's heart was touched with sympathy as he beheld their sorrow. Then,
directing that the weeping friends be sent from the room, he kneeled down and
prayed fervently to God to restore Dorcas to life and health. Turning to the
body, he said, "Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter,
she sat up." Dorcas had been of great service to the church, and God saw fit to
bring her back from the land of the enemy, that her skill and energy might still
be a blessing to others, and also that by this manifestation of His power the
cause of Christ might be strengthened. "
LAME MAN AT GATE BEAUTIFUL
ACTS 3:2-10
2 And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid
daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them
that entered into the temple;
3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.
5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.
6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee:
In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted [him] up: and immediately his
feet and ankle bones received strength.
8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple,
walking, and leaping, and praising God.
9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God:
10 And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the
temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had
happened unto him.
HOW ABOUT PAUL?
ACTS 20:7-12
7. "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to
break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and
continued his speech until midnight.
8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered
together.
9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen
into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and
fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.
10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not
yourselves; for his life is in him.
11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and
talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.
12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
PAUL AND HEALING ~ HOW MANY DID PAUL HEAL ?
AA 181
"At one time, while Paul was telling the people of Christ's work as a healer of
the sick and afflicted, he saw among his hearers a cripple whose eyes were
fastened on him and who received and believed his words. Paul's heart went out
in sympathy toward the afflicted man, in whom he discerned one who "had faith to
be healed." In the presence of the idolatrous assembly Paul commanded the
cripple to stand upright on his feet. Heretofore the sufferer had been able to
take a sitting posture only, but now he instantly obeyed Paul's command and for
the first time in his life stood on his feet. Strength came with this effort of
faith, and he who had been a cripple "leaped and walked."
AA 446
""In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose
name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously. And it
came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody
flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed
him. So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came,
and were healed: who also honored us with many honors; and when we departed,
they laded us with such things as were necessary."
WHAT DID THE PROPHETS DO ?
HOW ABOUT ELIJAH ?
WIDOWS SON ~
1 KINGS 17;17-24
17. And it came to pass after these things, [that] the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was
no breath left in him.
18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art
thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?
19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and
carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought
evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?
21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD,
and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.
22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into
him again, and he revived.
23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the
house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou [art] a man of
God, [and] that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth. "
HOW ABOUT ELISHA -
THE SHUNAMMITE’S SON
2 Kings 4:18-37
18 " And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his
father to the reapers.
19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry
him to his mother
20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees
till noon, and then died.
21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door
upon him, and went out.
22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the
young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come
again.
23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon,
nor Sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.
:24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward;
slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.
25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to
pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant,
Behold, yonder is that Shunammite:
:26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee?
is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is
well.
27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet:
but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone;
for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not
told me.
28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive
me?
29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand,
and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee,
answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.
30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth,
I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the
child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet
him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.
32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid
upon his bed
33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the
LORD.
34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and
his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself
upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and
stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child
opened his eyes.
36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And
when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.
4:37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground,
and took up her son, and went out. "
NAAMAN
2 Kings 5:10-15
10. "So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door
of the house of Elisha.
10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven
times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.
11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will
surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and
strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.
12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of
Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a
rage.
13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the
prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? How
much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the
saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a
little child, and he was clean.
15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and
stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all
the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy
servant.
16 But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none.
And he urged him to take it; but he refused. "
17 And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant
two mules' burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt
offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD.
5:18 In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, [that] when my master goeth into
the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow
myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon,
the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing.
19 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.
20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master
hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he
brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of
him.
21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him,
he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, is all well?
22 And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now
there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the
prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of
garments.
5:23 And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound
two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them
upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.
5:24 And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed
them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.
5:25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him,
Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither.
5:26 And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned
again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to
receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and
menservants, and maidservants?
5:27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed
for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow. "
HOW ABOUT ISAIAH AND HEALING
HEZEKIAH
2 Kings 20:5-7
"Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD,
the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears:
behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of
the LORD.
6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this
city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for
mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil,
and he recovered."
6. HEALING DURING SISTER WHITE’S TIME
AS AN EXAMPLE
Review and Herald, July 26, 1906. {CME 10.1}
"The Lord gave me great light on health reform. In connection with my husband, I
was to be a medical missionary worker. I was to set an example to the church by
taking the sick to my home and caring for them. This I have done, giving the
women and children vigorous treatment. "

"Just as the meeting closed, Sister Meade, who had been afflicted with a slow
fever, requested us to pray for her. We went into a room by ourselves, Brethren
Holt, Wheeler, Stowell, James, and self. After I had anointed her with oil we
prayed over her, and she was healed every whit and fell prostrate by the power
of God. That night we got into a rowboat and went on the pond about one mile to
Brother Meade's. His sister was there with a very sick child. We anointed it
with oil and prayed over it, and God heard our prayers."

"Then Satan came in another form. My husband was taken very sick. His symptoms
were alarming. He cramped at intervals, and suffered excruciating pain. His feet
and limbs were cold. I rubbed them until I had no strength to do so longer.
Brother Harris was away some miles at his work, and there were only Sisters
Harris and Bonfoey and my sister Sarah present, and I was just gathering courage
to dare believe in the promises of God. If ever I felt my weakness it was then.
We knew that something must be done immediately. Every moment his case was
growing more critical. It was clearly a case of cholera. He asked us to pray,
and we dared not refuse, and in great weakness we bowed before the Lord. With a
deep sense of my unworthiness, I laid my hands upon his head, and prayed the
Lord to reveal his power. A change was effected immediately. The natural color
of his face returned, and the light of Heaven beamed upon his countenance. We
were all filled with gratitude unspeakable. We never had witnessed a more
remarkable answer to prayer "

"In the winter and spring I suffered much with heart disease. It was difficult
for me to breathe lying down, and I could not sleep unless raised in nearly a
sitting posture. My breath often stopped, and fainting fits were frequent. But
this was not all my trouble. I had upon my left eye-lid a swelling which
appeared to be a cancer. It had been more than a year increasing gradually until
it was quite painful and affected my sight. In reading or writing I was forced
to bandage the afflicted eye. And I was constantly afflicted with the thought
that my eye might be destroyed with a cancer. I looked back to the days and
nights spent in reading proof-sheets, which had strained my eyes, and thought,
If I lose my eye, and my life, I shall be a martyr to the cause. }
"A celebrated physician visited Rochester, who gave counsel free. I decided to
have him examine my eye. He thought the swelling would prove to be a cancer. He
felt my pulse and said, 'You are much diseased, and will die of apoplexy before
that swelling will break out. You are in a dangerous condition with disease of
the heart.' This did not startle me, for I had been aware that unless I received
speedy relief I must lie in the grave. Two other women had come for counsel who
were suffering with the same disease. The physician said that I was in a more
dangerous condition than either of them, and it could not be more than three
weeks before I would be afflicted with paralysis. I inquired if he thought his
medicine would cure me. He did not give me much encouragement. I purchased some
of his medicine. The eye-wash was very painful, and I received no benefit from
it. I was unable to use the remedies that physician prescribed.
"In about three weeks I fainted and fell to the floor, and remained nearly
unconscious about thirty-six hours. It was feared that I could not live, but in
answer to prayer again I revived. One week later, while conversing with sister
Anna, I received a shock upon my left side. My head was numb, and I had a
strange sensation of coldness and numbness in my head, with pressure, and severe
pain through my temples. My tongue seemed heavy and numb; I could not speak
plainly. My left arm and side were helpless. I thought I was dying, and my great
anxiety was to have the evidence in my sufferings that the Lord loved me. For
months I had suffered such constant pain in my heart that I did not have one
joyful feeling. My spirits were constantly depressed. I had tried to serve God
from principle without feeling, but I now thirsted for the salvation of God,
that I might realize his blessing notwithstanding the pain in my heart.
"The brethren and sisters came together to make my case a special subject of
prayer. My desire was granted. Prayer was heard, and I received the blessing of
God, and had the assurance that he loved me. But the pain continued, and I grew
more feeble every hour. The brethren and sisters again came together to present
my case to the Lord. I was then so weak that I could not pray vocally. My
appearance seemed to weaken the faith of those around me. Then the promises of
God were arrayed before me as I had never viewed them before. It seemed to me
that Satan was striving to tear me from my husband and children and lay me in
the grave, and these questions were suggested to my mind, Can you believe the
naked promise of God? Can you walk out by faith, let the appearance be what it
may? Faith revived. I whispered to my husband, 'I believed that I shall
recover.' He answered, 'I wish I could believe it.' I retired that night without
relief, yet relying with firm confidence upon the promises of God. I could not
sleep, but continued my silent prayer to God. Just before day I slept.
"As I awoke, the rising sun was seen from my window. I was perfectly free from
pain. The pressure upon my heart was gone, and I was very happy. I was filled
with gratitude. The praise of God was upon my lips. Oh, what a change! It seemed
to me that an angel of God had touched me while I was sleeping. I awoke my
husband and related to him the wonderful work that the Lord had wrought for me.
He could scarcely comprehend it at first; but when I arose and dressed and
walked around the house, and he witnessed the change in my countenance, he could
praise God with me. My afflicted eye was free from pain. In a few days the
cancer was gone, and my eyesight was fully restored. The work was complete.
"Again I visited the physician, and as soon as he felt my pulse he said, 'Madam,
you are better. An entire change has taken place in your system; but the two
women who visited me for counsel when you were last here are dead.' I stated to
him that his medicine had not cured me, as I could take none of it. After I
left, the doctor said to a friend of mine, 'Her case is a mystery. I do not
understand it.'"

" During the meeting at Topsham, I was shown that I would be much afflicted, and
that we would have a trial of our faith after our return to Gorham, where my
parents were then living.
" On our return, I was taken very sick, and suffered extremely. My parents,
husband, and sisters united in prayer for me, but I suffered on for three weeks.
I often fainted like one dead, but in answer to prayer revived again. My agony
was so great that I pleaded with those around me not to pray for me; for I
thought their prayers were protracting my sufferings. Our neighbors gave me up
to die. For a time it pleased the Lord to try our faith.
"Brother and Sister Nichols, of Dorchester, Massachusetts, had heard of my
affliction, and their son Henry came to Gorham, bringing things for my comfort.
During his visit, my friends again united in prayer for my recovery. After
others had prayed, Brother Henry Nichols began to pray most fervently; and with
the power of God resting upon him, he arose from his knees, came across the
room, and laid his hands upon my head, saying, "Sister Ellen, Jesus Christ
maketh thee whole," and fell back, prostrated by the power of God. I believed
that the work was of God, and the pain left me. My soul was filled with
gratitude and peace. The language of my heart was: "There is no help for us but
in God. We can be in peace only as we rest in Him and wait for His salvation."

""About this time I was shown that my husband must not labor in preaching, or
with his hands; that a little over-exercise then would place him in a hopeless
condition. At this he wept and groaned. Said he, 'Must I then become a church
pauper?' Again I was shown that God designed to raise him up gradually; that we
must exercise strong faith, for in every effort we should be fiercely buffeted
by Satan; that we must look away from outward appearance, and believe. Three
times a day we went alone before God, and engaged in earnest prayer for the
recovery of his health. This was the whole burden of our petitions, and
frequently one of us would be prostrated by the power of God. The Lord
graciously heard our earnest cries, and my husband began to recover. For many
months our prayers ascended to heaven three times a day for health to do the
will of God. These seasons of prayer were very precious. We were brought into a
sacred nearness to God, and had sweet communion with him."
FRANCES HOWLAND - RHEUMATIC FEVER
CET 69, 71,72
" In the spring of 1845 I made a visit to Topsham, Maine. On one occasion quite
a number of us were assembled at the house of Brother Stockbridge Howland. His
eldest daughter, Miss Frances Howland, a very dear friend of mine, was sick with
the rheumatic fever, and under the doctor's care. Her hands were so badly
swollen that the joints could not be distinguished. As we sat together speaking
of her case, Brother Howland was asked if he had faith that his daughter could
be healed in answer to prayer. He answered that he would try to believe that she
might, and presently declared that he did believe it possible.
"We all knelt in earnest prayer to God in her behalf. We claimed the promise,
"Ask, and ye shall receive." John 16:24. The blessing of God attended our
prayers, and we had the assurance that God was willing to heal the afflicted
one. One of the brethren present cried out, "Is there a sister here who has the
faith to go and take her by the hand, and bid her arise in the name of the
Lord?"
"Sister Frances was lying in the chamber above, and before he ceased speaking
Sister Curtis was on her way to the stairs. She entered the sickroom with the
Spirit of God upon her, and taking the invalid by the hand, said, "Sister
Frances, in the name of the Lord arise, and be whole." New life shot through the
veins of the sick girl, a holy faith took possession of her, and obeying its
impulse, she rose from her bed, stood upon her feet, and walked the room,
praising God for her recovery. She was soon dressed, and came down into the room
where we were assembled, her countenance lighted up with unspeakable joy and
gratitude. {CET 71.2}
"The next morning she took breakfast with us. Soon after, as Elder White was
reading from the fifth chapter of James for family worship, the doctor came into
the hall, and, as usual, went upstairs to visit his patient. Not finding her
there, he hurried down, and with a look of alarm opened the door of the large
kitchen where we were all sitting, his patient with us. He gazed upon her with
astonishment, and at length ejaculated, "So Frances is better!"
"Brother Howland answered, "The Lord has healed her," and the reader resumed his
chapter where he had been interrupted: "Is any sick among you? let him call for
the elders of the church; and let them pray over him." James 5:14. The doctor
listened with a curious expression of mingled wonder and incredulity upon his
face, nodded, and hastily left the room. "
ONE OF OUR NUMBER
CET 101,2
" Sabbath afternoon one of our number was sick, and requested prayers that he
might be healed. We all united in applying to the Physician who never lost a
case, and while healing power came down, and the sick was healed, the Spirit
fell upon me, and I was taken off in vision."
HENRY, SISTER WHITES SON
CET 116
" Little Henry was soon taken very sick, and grew worse so fast that we were
much alarmed. He lay in a stupid state; his breathing was quick and heavy. We
gave remedies with no success. We then called in a person of experience in
sickness, who said that his recovery was doubtful. We had prayed for him, but
there was no change. We had made the child an excuse for not traveling and
laboring for the good of others, and we feared the Lord was about to remove him.
Once more we went before the Lord, praying that He would have compassion upon
us, and spare the life of the child, and solemnly pledging ourselves to go forth
trusting in God, wherever He might send us.
" Our petitions were fervent and agonizing. By faith we claimed the promises of
God, and we believed that He listened to our cries. Light from heaven was
breaking through the clouds and shining upon us. Our prayers were graciously
answered. From that hour the child began to recover."
(LATER ON HENRY DID PASS AWAY.)
BRO. PHILIP COLLIN’S SON
CET 122
" One morning in February, 1849, during family prayers at Brother Howland's, I
was shown that it was our duty to go to Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Soon after, my
husband went to the post office, and brought a letter from Brother Philip
Collins, urging us to come to Dartmouth, for their son was very sick. We went
immediately, and found that the boy, who was thirteen years old, had been sick
for nine weeks with the whooping cough, and was wasted almost to a skeleton. The
parents thought him to be in consumption, and they were greatly distressed to
think that their only son must be taken from them.
" We united in prayer for the boy, and earnestly besought the Lord to spare his
life. We believed that he would get well, though to all appearances there was no
possibility of his recovery. My husband raised him in his arms, exclaiming as he
walked the room, "You will not die, but live!" We believed that God would be
glorified in his recovery.
"We left Dartmouth, and were absent about eight days. When we returned, little
Gilbert came out to meet us. He had gained four pounds in weight. We found the
household rejoicing in God over this manifestation of divine favor. "
SISTER TEMPLE’S INFECTED ARM
CET 122,3
" Having received a request to visit Sister Hastings, of New Ipswich, New
Hampshire, who was greatly afflicted, we made the matter a subject of prayer,
and obtained evidence that the Lord would go with us. On our way we stopped at
Dorchester, with Brother Otis Nichols's family, and they told us of the
affliction of Sister Temple of Boston. On her arm she had a sore, which caused
her much anxiety. It had extended over the bend of the elbow. She had suffered
great agony, and had in vain resorted to human means for relief. The last effort
had driven the disease to her lungs, and she felt that unless she obtained
immediate help, the disease would end in consumption.
"Sister Temple had left word for us to come and pray for her. We went with
trembling, having sought in vain for the assurance that God would work in her
behalf. We went into the sickroom, relying upon the naked promises of God.
Sister Temple's arm was in such a condition that we could not touch it, and were
obliged to pour the oil upon it. Then we united in prayer, and claimed the
promises of God. The pain and soreness left the arm while we were praying, and
we left Sister Temple rejoicing in the Lord. On our return, eight days later, we
found her in good health, and hard at work at the washtub."

DA 823,4
""They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." This world is a
vast lazar house, but Christ came to heal the sick, to proclaim deliverance to
the captives of Satan. He was in Himself health and strength. He imparted His
life to the sick, the afflicted, those possessed of demons. He turned away none
who came to receive His healing power. He knew that those who petitioned Him for
help had brought disease upon themselves; yet He did not refuse to heal them. -

witness the same results? - - - - And He is just as willing to heal the sick now

SO OF COURSE, WE WILL NOT FORGET TO CALL FOR THE ELDERS ~
James 5:13-16
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let
them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up;
and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be
healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."

Study the word, and with your Bible in your hand say. "Here, Lord, I come to

WHY NO ANSWERS TO OUR PRAYERS ?

3T 164,5
"Knowledge must be gained in regard to how to eat, and drink, and dress so as to
preserve health. Sickness is caused by violating the laws of health; it is the
result of violating nature's law. Our first duty, one which we owe to God, to
ourselves, and to our fellow men, is to obey the laws of God, which include the
laws of health. If we are sick, we impose a weary tax upon our friends, and
unfit ourselves for discharging our duties to our families and to our neighbors.
And when premature death is the result of our violation of nature's law, we
bring sorrow and suffering to others; we deprive our neighbors of the help we
ought to render them in living; we rob our families of the comfort and help we
might render them, and rob God of the service He claims of us to advance His
glory. Then, are we not, in the worst sense, transgressors of God's law? "
WHAT IS NECESSARY?
COL 351
"Money has great value, because it can do great good. In the hands of God's

money is of no more value than sand, only as it is put to use in providing for
the necessities of life, in blessing others, and advancing the cause of Christ."
Southern Watchman, Aug. 1, 1905. {ChS 254.3}

WHY NOT PRAYER AND MIRACLES INSTEAD OF SANITARIUMS?
EV 594
"Our sanitariums are to reach a class that can be reached by no other means.
"Why," asks one and another, "is not prayer offered for the miraculous healing
of the sick, instead of so many sanitariums being established?" Should this be
done, great fanaticism would arise in our ranks. . . . . .Should we carry out
the plans that some would be pleased to have us carry out, companies would be
formed who would bring in spiritualistic manifestations that would confuse the
faith of many. . . . "
NO SPIRITUAL SAFETY IN MIRACLES TODAY -
LDE 169
" The way in which Christ worked was to preach the Word, and to relieve
suffering by miraculous works of healing. But I am instructed that we cannot now

healing, claiming to be divine, will be wrought.-
God's people will not find their safety in working miracles, for Satan will
counterfeit the miracles that will be wrought.–"
[MIRACLES WILL ACCOMPANY THE MINISTRY OF GOD'S PEOPLE UNDER THE LOUD CRY, BUT
THEY WILL NOT HAVE THE SIGNIFICANCE THEY DID IN CHRIST'S DAY. THE PERFORMING OF
MIRACLES WILL NO LONGER BE A PROOF OF DIVINE ENDORSEMENT.]
9T 16
"And Satan, surrounded by evil angels, and claiming to be God, will work
miracles of all kinds, to deceive, if possible, the very elect. God's people
will not find their safety in working miracles, for Satan will counterfeit the
miracles that will be wrought. God's tried and tested people will find their
power in the sign spoken of in Exodus 31:12-18. They are to take their stand on
the living word: "It is written."
EX. 31:13
"Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you
throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth
sanctify you."
WHAT WERE THESE SANITARIUMS TO BE LIKE ?
PREACHING & HEALING NOT TO BE SEPARATED ~~~~
9T 170,71
"Christ, the great medical missionary, is our example. . . . He healed the sick
and preached the gospel. In His service, healing and teaching were linked
closely together. Today they are not to be separated."-
WHAT KIND OF SANITARIUMS WERE THESE TO BE ?
HEALTH REFORM ~
CD 75
"The sanitariums which are established are to be closely and inseparably bound
up with the gospel. The Lord has given instruction that the gospel is to be
carried forward; and the gospel includes health reform in all its phases."
CD 283
" It is right that no tea, coffee, or flesh meat be served in our sanitariums. "
CD 289
"I have received instruction in regard to the use of flesh meat in our
sanitariums. Flesh meat should be excluded from the diet, and its place should
be supplied by wholesome, palatable food, prepared in such a way as to be
appetizing. "
BIBLE STUDIES ~
CH 239
" Not one quarter of the work has been done in opening the Scriptures to the
sick that might have been done, and that would have been done, in our
sanitariums, if the workers had themselves received thorough instruction in
religious lines."
NOT TO BE STAFFED BY WORLDLY HELP ~~~~~
CH 393
"Institutions for the care of the sick are to be established where men and women
suffering from disease may be placed under the care of God-fearing physicians
and nurses and be treated without drugs."
NO LARGE BUILDINGS - OUT IN THE COUNTRY ~~~~
CH 211
"The sick are to be reached, not by massive buildings, but by the establishment
of many small sanitariums, which are to be as lights shining in a dark place."
MESSAGE - "OUT OF THE CITIES"
CH 231
""Out of the cities! out of the cities!"--this has been my message for years. We
cannot expect the sick to recover rapidly when they are shut in within four
walls, in some city, with no outside view but houses, houses, houses--nothing to
animate, nothing to enliven. And yet how slow some are to realize that the
crowded cities are not favorable places for sanitarium work! "
CONNECTED WITH COOKING SCHOOLS ~~~~
CD 254
"Connected with our sanitariums and schools there should be cooking schools,
where instruction is given on the proper preparation of food"
SANITARIUMS - NOT HOTELS ~~~~
CD 294
" We are not building sanitariums for hotels. Receive into our sanitariums only
those who desire to conform to right principles, those who will accept the foods
that we can conscientiously place before them."
NO DRUGS ~~~~
CH 397
"Let them pray for the sick, ministering to their necessities, not with drugs,
but with nature's remedies, and teaching them how to regain health and avoid
disease. "
CD 303
"In our sanitariums, we advocate the use of simple remedies. We discourage the
use of drugs, for they poison the current of the blood. In these institutions
sensible instruction should be given how to eat, how to drink, how to dress, and
how to live so that the health may be preserved. "
CD 304
"The question of health reform is not agitated as it must and will be. A simple
diet, and the entire absence of drugs, leaving nature free to recuperate the
wasted energies of the body, would make our sanitariums far more effectual in
restoring the sick to health."
THE TRUE REMEDIES
CH 90
"Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of
water, trust in divine power--these are the true remedies."
10. EXAMPLES OF DRUG USE
CASE AFTER CASE PRESENTED ~ CAUSE AND EFFECT ~
2SM 443 - 450
" Several illustrations of this great subject have been presented before me. The
first was a family consisting of a father and daughter. The daughter was sick,
and the father was much troubled on her account, and summoned a physician. As
the father conducted him into the sick room, he manifested a painful anxiety.
The physician examined the patient, and said but little. They both left the sick
room. The father informed the physician that he had buried the mother, a son and
daughter, and this daughter was all that was left to him of his family. He
anxiously inquired of the physician if he thought his daughter's case hopeless.
"The physician then inquired in regard to the nature and length of the sickness
of those who had died. The father moanfully related the painful facts connected
with the illness of his loved ones. "My son was first attacked with a fever. I
called a physician. He said that he could administer medicine which would soon
break the fever. He gave him powerful medicine, but was disappointed in its
effects. The fever was reduced, but my son grew dangerously sick. The same
medicine was again given him, without producing any change for the better. The
physician then resorted to still more powerful medicines, but my son obtained no
relief. The fever left him, but he did not rally. He sank rapidly and died.
"The death of my son so sudden and unexpected was a great grief to us all, but
especially to his mother. Her watching and anxiety in his sickness, and her
grief occasioned by his sudden death, were too much for her nervous system, and
my wife was soon prostrated. I felt dissatisfied with the course pursued by this
physician. My confidence in his skill was shaken, and I could not employ him a
second time. I called another to my suffering wife. This second physician gave
her a liberal dose of opium, which he said would relieve her pains, quiet her
nerves, and give her rest, which she much needed. The opium stupefied her. She
slept, and nothing could arouse her from the death-like stupor. Her pulse and
heart at times throbbed violently, and then grew more and more feeble in their
action, until she ceased to breathe. Thus she died without giving her family one
look of recognition. This second death seemed more than we could endure. We all
sorrowed deeply but I was agonized and could not be comforted.
"My daughter was next afflicted. Grief, anxiety and watching, had overtasked her
powers of endurance, and her strength gave way, and she was brought upon a bed
of suffering. I have now lost confidence in both the physicians I had employed.
Another physician was recommended to me as being successful in treating the
sick. And although he lived at a distance, I was determined to obtain his
services.
"This third physician professed to understand my daughter's case. He said that
she was greatly debilitated, and that her nervous system was deranged, and that
fever was upon her, which could be controlled, but that it would take time to
bring her up from her present state of debility. He expressed perfect confidence
in his ability to raise her. He gave her powerful medicine to break up the
fever. This was accomplished. But as the fever left, the case assumed more
alarming features, and grew more complicated. As the symptoms changed, the
medicines were varied to meet the case. While under the influence of new
medicines she would, for a time, appear revived, which would flatter our hopes,
that she would get well, only to make our disappointment more bitter as she
became worse.
"The physician's last resort was calomel. For some time she seemed to be between
life and death. She was thrown into convulsions. As these most distressing
spasms ceased, we were aroused to the painful fact that her intellect was
weakened. She began slowly to improve, although still a great sufferer. Her
limbs were crippled as the effect of the powerful poisons which she had taken.
She lingered a few years a helpless, pitiful sufferer, and died in much agony."
" After this sad relation the father looked imploringly to the physician, and
entreated him to save his only remaining child. The physician looked sad and
anxious, but made no prescription. He arose to leave, saying that he would call
the next day.
"Another scene was then presented before me. I was brought into the presence of
a female, apparently about thirty years of age. A physician was standing by her,
and reporting, that her nervous system was deranged, that her blood was impure,
and moved sluggishly, and that her stomach was in a cold, inactive condition. He
said that he would give her active remedies which would soon improve her
condition. He gave her a powder from a vial upon which was written, Nux Vomica.
I watched to see what effect this would have upon the patient. It appeared to
act favorably. Her condition seemed better. She was animated, and even seemed
cheerful and active.
" My attention was then called to still another case. I was introduced into the
sick room of a young man who was in a high fever. A physician was standing by
the bedside of the sufferer with a portion of medicine taken from a vial upon
which was written Calomel. He administered this chemical poison, and a change
seemed to take place, but not for the better.
" I was then shown still another case. It was that of a female, who seemed to be
suffering much pain. A physician stood by the bedside of the patient, and was
administering medicine, taken from a vial, upon which was written, Opium. At
first this drug seemed to affect the mind. She talked strangely, but finally
became quiet and slept.
"My attention was then called to the first case, that of the father who had lost
his wife and two children. The physician was in the sick room, standing by the
bedside of the afflicted daughter. Again he left the room without giving
medicine. The father, when in the presence of the physician alone seemed deeply
moved, and he inquired impatiently, "Do you intend to do nothing? Will you leave
my only daughter to die?" The physician said,--
"I have listened to the sad history of the death of your much loved wife, and
your two children, and have learned from your own lips that all three have died
while in the care of physicians, while taking medicines prescribed and
administered by their hands. Medicine has not saved your loved ones, and as a
physician I solemnly believe that none of them need, or ought to have died. They
could have recovered if they had not been so drugged that nature was enfeebled
by abuse, and finally crushed." He stated decidedly to the agitated father "I
cannot give medicine to your daughter. I shall only seek to assist nature in her
efforts, by removing every obstruction, and then leave nature to recover the
exhausted energies of the system." He placed in the father's hand a few
directions which he enjoined upon him to follow closely.
"Keep the patient free from excitement, and every influence calculated to
depress. Her attendants should be cheerful and hopeful. She should have a simple
diet, and should be allowed plenty of pure soft water to drink. Bathe frequently
in pure soft water followed by gentle rubbing. Let the light, and air, be freely
admitted into her room. She must have quiet, and undisturbed rest."
" The father slowly read the prescription, and wondered at the few simple
directions it contained, and seemed doubtful of any good resulting from such
simple means. Said the physician,
"You have had sufficient confidence in my skill to place the life of your
daughter in my hands. Withdraw not your confidence. I will visit your daughter
daily, and direct you in the management of her case. Follow my directions with
confidence, and I trust in a few weeks to present her to you in a much better
condition of health, if not fully restored."
"The father looked sad and doubtful, but submitted to the decision of the
physician. He feared that his daughter must die if she had no medicine.
"The second case was again presented before me. The patient had appeared better
under the influence of nux vomica. She was sitting up, folding a shawl closely
around her, and complaining of chilliness. The air in the room was impure. It
was heated and had lost its vitality. Almost every crevice where the pure air
could enter was guarded to protect the patient from a sense of painful
chilliness, which was especially felt in the back of the neck and down the
spinal column. If the door was left ajar, she seemed nervous and distressed, and
entreated that it should be closed, for she was cold. She could not bear the
least draught of air from the door or windows. A gentleman of intelligence stood
looking pityingly upon her, and said to those present,--
"This is the second result of nux vomica. It is especially felt upon the nerves,
and it affects the whole nervous system. There will be, for a time, increased
forced action upon the nerves. But as the strength of this drug is spent, there
will be chilliness, and prostration. Just to that degree that it excites and
enlivens, will be the deadening, benumbing results following."
"The third case was again presented before me. It was that of the young man to
whom was administered calomel. He was a great sufferer. His lips were dark and
swollen. His gums were inflamed. His tongue was thick and swollen, and the
saliva was running from his mouth in large quantities. The intelligent gentleman
before mentioned looked sadly upon the sufferer, and said,--
"This is the influence of mercurial preparations. This young man had remaining,
sufficient nervous energy, to commence a warfare upon this intruder, this
drug-poison to attempt to expel it from the system. Many have not sufficient
life-forces left to arouse to action, and nature is overpowered and ceases her
efforts, and the victim dies."
"The fourth case, the person to whom was given opium, was again presented before
me. She had awakened from her sleep much prostrated. Her mind was distracted.
She was impatient and irritable, finding fault with her best friends, and
imagining that they did not try to relieve her sufferings. She became frantic,
and raved like a maniac. The gentleman before mentioned looked sadly upon the
sufferer, and said to those present,--
"This is the second result from taking opium." Her physician was called. He gave
her an increased dose of opium which quieted her ravings, yet made her very
talkative and cheerful. She was at peace with all around her, and expressed much
affection for acquaintances, as well as her relatives. She soon grew drowsy and
fell into a stupefied condition. The gentleman mentioned above, solemnly said,--
}
"Her conditions of health are no better now than when she was in her frantic
ravings. She is decidedly worse. This drug-poison, opium, gives temporary relief
from pain, but does not remove the cause of pain. It only stupefies the brain,
rendering it incapable of receiving impressions from the nerves. While the brain
is thus insensible, the hearing, the taste, and sight are affected. When the
influence of opium wears off, and the brain arouses from its state of paralysis,
the nerves, which had been cut off from communication with the brain, shriek out
louder than ever the pains in the system, because of the additional outrage the
system has sustained in receiving this poison. Every additional drug given to
the patient, whether it be opium, or some other poison, will complicate the
case, and make the patient's recovery more hopeless. The drugs given to stupefy,
whatever they may be, derange the nervous system. An evil, simple in the
beginning, which nature aroused herself to overcome, and which she would have
done had she been left to herself, has been made ten-fold worse by drug-poisons
being introduced into the system, which is a destructive disease of itself,
forcing into extraordinary action the remaining life-forces to war against and
overcome the drug-intruder."
" I was brought again into the sick room of the first case, that of the father
and his daughter. The daughter was sitting by the side of her father, cheerful
and happy, with the glow of health upon her countenance. The father was looking
upon her with happy satisfaction, his countenance speaking the gratitude of his
heart, that his only child was spared to him. Her physician entered, and after
conversing with the father and child for a short time, arose to leave. He
addressed the father, thus,--
"I present to you your daughter restored to health. I gave her no medicine that
I might leave her with an unbroken constitution. Medicine never could have
accomplished this. Medicine deranges nature's fine machinery, and breaks down
the constitution, and kills, but never cures. Nature alone possesses the
restorative powers. She alone can build up her exhausted energies, and repair
the injuries she has received by inattention to her fixed laws."
" He then asked the father if he was satisfied with his manner of treatment. The
happy father expressed his heartfelt gratitude, and perfect satisfaction,
saying,--
"I have learned a lesson I shall never forget. It was painful, yet it is of
priceless value. I am now convinced that my wife and children need not have
died. Their lives were sacrificed while in the hands of physicians by their
poisonous drugs."
I was then shown the second case, the patient to whom nux vomica had been
administered. She was being supported by two attendants, from her chair to her
bed. She had nearly lost the use of her limbs. The spinal nerves were partially
paralyzed, and the limbs had lost their power to bear the weight of the person.
She coughed distressingly, and breathed with difficulty. She was laid upon the
bed, and soon lost her hearing, and seeing, and thus she lingered awhile, and
died. The gentleman before mentioned looked sorrowfully upon the lifeless body,
and said to those present,--
"Witness the mildest and protracted influence of nux vomica upon the human
system. At its introduction, the nervous energy was excited to extraordinary
action to meet this drug-poison. This extra excitement was followed by
prostration, and the final result has been paralysis of the nerves. This drug
does not have the same effect upon all. Some who have powerful constitutions can
recover from abuses to which they may subject the system. While others, whose
hold of life is not as strong, who possess enfeebled constitutions, have never
recovered from receiving into the system even one dose, and many die from no
other cause than the effects of one portion of this poison. Its effects are
always tending to death. The condition the system is in, at the time these
poisons are received into it, determine the life of the patient. Nux vomica can
cripple, paralyze, destroy health forever, but it never cures." }
"The third case was again presented before me, that of the young man to whom had
been administered calomel. He was a pitiful sufferer. His limbs were crippled,
and he was greatly deformed. He stated that his sufferings were beyond
description, and life was to him a great burden. The gentleman whom I have
repeatedly mentioned, looked upon the sufferer with sadness and pity, and
said,--
"This is the effect of calomel. It torments the system as long as there is a
particle left in it. It ever lives, not losing its properties by its long stay
in the living system. It inflames the joints, and often sends rottenness into
the bones. It frequently manifests itself in tumors, ulcers, and cancers, years
after it has been introduced into the system."
"The fourth case was again presented before me--the patient to whom opium had
been administered. Her countenance was sallow, and her eyes were restless and
glassy. Her hands shook as if palsied, and she seemed to be greatly excited,
imagining that all present were leagued against her. Her mind was a complete
wreck, and she raved in a pitiful manner. The physician was summoned, and seemed
to be unmoved at these terrible exhibitions. He gave the patient a more powerful
portion of opium, which he said would set her all right. Her ravings did not
cease until she became thoroughly intoxicated. She then passed into a deathlike
stupor. The gentleman mentioned, looked upon the patient and said sadly,--
"Her days are numbered. The efforts nature has made have been so many times
overpowered by this poison, that the vital forces are exhausted by being
repeatedly induced to unnatural action to rid the system of this poisonous drug.
Nature's efforts are about to cease, and then the patient's suffering life will
end."
" More deaths have been caused by drug-taking than from all other causes
combined. If there was in the land one physician in the place of thousands, a
vast amount of premature mortality would be prevented. Multitudes of physicians,
and multitudes of drugs, have cursed the inhabitants of the earth, and have
carried thousands and tens of thousands to untimely graves."
2SM 451
" Drugs never cure disease. They only change the form and location. Nature alone
is the effectual restorer, and how much better could she perform her task if
left to herself. But this privilege is seldom allowed her. If crippled nature
bears up under the load, and finally accomplishes in a great measure her double
task, and the patient lives, the credit is given to the physician.
